dell monitor dvi

I have a 19" Dell monitor with a DVI connection. I just bought a thunderbolt/dvi adaptor today and I cannot get my monitor to work. When I look in the System applet and select Thunderbolt, it says that no device is connected. I checked Dell's support and they said that they do not test their monitors with Apple products (of course not, that's competition). So I was wondering if anyone here knows if I can make this work or did I waste my money on the adaptor?

Is the Mini DisplayPort plug pushed in all the way (no metal showing)?

everything is solidly connected. no metal showing and the monitor is secured tightly to the adapter.

Another thing, whenI unplug the adapter the monitor says no DVI-D attached, and when I plug it back in it says entering power save mode. So the monitor sees the adapter, no need to exchange it I guess?

I work daily with Apple computers and Dell monitors and have not had many issues - they usually work.

You do not say what Dell model you have.

Did you try to change the resolution and see if correct external display is detected.

System Preferences / Displays.
