Can I use iTunes Match as a backup?

Can this be used as a backup so that if I ever lose my iTunes collection (especially stuff that I loaded from my 900+ CDs) I can restore without having to reload all those discs? I have 8000+ songs on my pad and losing everything would be really bad....
