You don't HAVE to shell out hundreds to be totally airprint compliant. I have a Kodak wireless printer - which is not an air print printer - and a $9 app gave me wireless printing. And Kodak had free options had I wanted to deal with Google docs. (I didn't go that way because I didn't want to deal with yet another online account or Google getting their hands on what I print)

many printer manufacturers are coming up with their own work arounds for models that do not have the airprint programming. Some of them have apps, others are in partnership with online services, and even if that doesnt' apply there are several apps out there that allow wireless printing.

Without knowing the OP's model there isn't any specific advice, and going all air print compliant is a solution, but it's not the only one.
