I had a son pass and do not know his ibook password. Called apple and can't afford the disks. Anyone know of a way to factory reset or bypass the ?password

Here's a couple of geeky solutions for Jaguar, answer #1, and Panther, answer #3.
Those commands will enable root user and let you have access to the whole data stored onto the disk.
