Q: How do I set-up my Time Capsule to work with my existing Wireless Router?

The existing  wireless router is my connection to the Internet and I would like to keep it that way. I really want the TC to fuction as an external Hard Drive/Server, Backup Disc! The TC is where all my Music and Photos are located together with my Backups!

I have tried different configurations and I get it to work for a wile, but after a few minutes it will disappear from my Air Port Utility, a rescan will not bring it back, but if I unplug and then plug it back in it will reappear. However if the TC shows in Air Port Utility or not the TC still shows up on my Desktop.

What Settings should I use in Air Port Utility, Should the Ethernet Cable be plugged into Ethernet or LAN Port?

My Current Settings are:

Ethernet Cable: Connected to the ETHERNET PORT

AirPor Tab:

Wireless Mode: OFF

Connect Using: ETHERNET

Internet Tab: Internet Connection

Connect Using: ETHERNET

Connection Sharing: OFF (BRIDGE MODE)

TCP/IP:

Configure IPv4: USING DHCP

    What OS are you running??

The setup looks correct to me..

If you are on v5 airport utility go to the TC advanced page and check the log for drops from the TC.

    I am Running OS 10.5.8 on a PowerBook G4.

Below you will see the Log (IP Address, AirPort ID, Eternet ID, Subnet Mask, Router Address, DNS Server Info has been removed).

I had the TC was originally set-up connected to a DLS Modem, all worked fine Backups over TM all was ok, but then the Modem died. (I upgraded to a Wireless Router). I did have it set up, but I nolonger know the settings, I wanted to do a backup with TM, which had not been done for a long time (6 months)

I tried to backup, but either it was not working or was taking sooooo long, that I decided to do the Backup over Ethernet (still took the hole day for 8.5 GB). I had read that I nedded to chang my setting to be able to Backup with Ethernet. Did not Save the previous settings hence my problem!

What Generation is the TC??  The A model number from the base will tell us.

Since you are running Leopard.. the latest firmware are hopeless.. and really designed only for the changes in Lion in mountain lion..

I would recommend going back to 7.5.2 firmware.

There is another way to do this.. Isolate the TC completely from internet. I guess you have been using wireless for internet.. go back to that.

Do a full factory reset on the TC.. That will return its IP to 10.0.1.1 .. What is the IP of the speedport?

Assuming it is using 192.168.x.x then set a static ip on the ethernet in the computer. 10.0.1.10, with subnet mask, 255.255.255.0 no gateway (router) no dns.

Plug the ethernet from computer to LAN port on the TC.. just ignore all the problems.. but make sure you have access to it in the airport utility.. try running the backup .. you might need to reset TM to pick up the drive.

    1st generation.

I tried going back to 7.5.2,  am still losing connection! Your other suggestion thou would mean that the TC would become a wired Hard Drive, not what I want at all.

I took the first part too literally.. you said.. and I quote..

I really want the TC to fuction as an external Hard Drive/Server, Backup Disc!

When you say I tried going back.. did it work? ie you actually got the TC back to 7.5.2 firmware.. just the wording is unclear.

I do not see any errors in the log you posted.. so I can only suggest you need to use fixed IP addresses. Perhaps do want you also don't want to do and rearrange the network so the TC takes the role of main router.

Ok after numerous attempts to get the TC to work with my Speedport router, trying all kinds of settings it is finally working as it should be! The exact set up I can no longer be sure about, (as I said, tried so many variable settings). However, I will say that it is not set up as a Bridge as I thought it should be, but is connected to the Speedport with a Ethernet Cable, were I joined the existing Wireless Network. If this is correct or not I do not know, all I know is that it is working!

You must NOT connect with ethernet and join an existing network.. if you did that .. therein lies your problem. it has probably failed on the join side now so TC is working...

The TC has to be bridged.. and plugged in by ethernet.

Obviously don't touch it until it gives trouble.. but if it does.. reset to factory and start again..

If you plug the computer to the TC by ethernet turn off wireless in the computer as that does cause issues.

But I am conected with ethernet and have joined my existing wireless network, and TC is now routed though the Speedport (Network Preferences state the I am conected with the Speedport Network Name not TC).

I had factory reset several times, but out of all the times I tried to set it up, this is the only time that it will work without the problem of dropping the conection. TC dose not show in the menu bar network drop down menu, it just shows the Speedport Network name. However, TC shows up on my Desktop like I want it to and it is backing up without a problem.

So for now I am happy as it is!
