Quicktime Removal

For the last 2 months quicktime and iTunes have been failing to start. I simply get error messages before either program pops up. I have tried SO many different thinks to fix the problem, including:
*Uninstalling/reinstalling (quicktime gave me an error and wouldn't uninstall)
*installing previous versions
*system restore to when it did work
*removing every trace of both programs by cleaning out the registery manually and with 2 programs
*using the windows installer clean up tool
*Installing a quicktime alternative (didn't work either)

It is ridiculous. No matter what I do, i can't play .mov files because these programs seem to have an error that is clinging to my system and I can't seem to shake it. I want to COMPLETELY remove itunes and quicktime from my system.

Anyone have any suggestions before I tear my hair out and reinstall windows?

I don't have the answer - I have the same or a very similar problem. I have an IPod Shuffle that I can't update or change because neither QuickTime nor iTunes will run.

My problem started a few days ago when I tried to use a CD that wanted an earlier version of QuickTime, so fool that I was I installed the earlier version. I think I had 7 point something, and went to 6 point something. Now, like you, I can't uninstall, reinstall, or otherwise get to work QuickTime or iTunes. What a pain!

I didn't try messing with the registry or manually deleting stuff - I just went through the uninstall procedure, which did not appear to uninstall either program -- at least they're still present on my programs list.

I'm running Windows XP Pro, by the way.

I sure hope someone offers some help --- until this week I just loved my iPod Shuffle and the iTunes program, but I'm rapidly devolving into seething resentment previously reserved for that other software company....

Here's what's happening:

When I go into Control Panel Change/Remove Programs, there's no QuickTime listed. So I can't remove it. But when I go into "All Programs" there is QuickTime. If I click to run or remove it, either one, I get an hour glass for a few seconds and then nothing.

I downloaded the standalone QuickTime installer, and tried running it. Everything appears to go fine until the very end, when I get an error message:

Error number 0x80040707
Description: DLL function call crashed: QTInstall Code. QuickTime Post Install Proc
Setup will now terminate.

So I click OK, and then I get a message that says:
The wizard was interrupted before QuickTime could be completely installed.

hi susan! (i'll drop a version of these instructions into your thread over at itunes fora as well.)

Error number 0x80040707
Description: DLL function call crashed: QTInstall Code. QuickTime Post Install Proc
Setup will now terminate.

that's a known complication of a broken QuickTime. in this context, it usually means the installation configuration information of the QuickTime has been compromised.

here's what we'll try first.

Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. then use it to clear any existing QuickTime installation configuration information from your PC:

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

next use the QuickTime component of the complete uninstall instructions in the following document as a guide to a manual removal of leftover QuickTime program files and folders.

Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows

once we've got all the existing QuickTime scraped away, let's try another careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall.

does it go through properly this time?

b noir, you are the BEST -- thank you thank you thank you ---

Not all the instructions worked quite the way they sounded but I persevered and eventually got through it, all 3 progs (QuickTi*e, iTunes, iPod) uninstalled and reinstalled and they appear to be working A-OK -- I can once again shuffle the tunes on the iPod shuffle, and play songs, and everything ---

Now if I could just figure out why 2 keys on the keyboard have quit working interittently -- the exclaation point and the e... e.... the letter after "n" ....

Have a great weekend >> excla*ation point <<< 🙂
