Plug ins for an old Mac?

Are plug ins available for a 7-year old iBookG4 that will provide more sounds or improve performance on GB? Or can I upgrade to OX 6.8 on this Mac so that I can get the newer GB? Thanks.

PowerBook, Mac OS X (10.4.1), Original? Garage Band program
