Applications keep closing unexpectedly, virus?

Recently, while using my computer, applications started closing unexpectedly. Activity Monitor shows that RAM and CPU are at normal levels. Also, the computer regularly freezes, and acts oddly. I did a reset - turn off computer, hold Shift, Control, Option and Power Button at the same time, release, then power on by pressing Power Button. It helped a bit, but applications still close regularly... By the way, I get the error message, prompting you to send an error report to apple when the apps close. Before the reset, I tried several times to do a scan with iAntiVirus (app store No.1 free app, made by Norton), but each time, it either froze up LOADS or the computer restarted... Suspicious. I understand that macs can get viruses, but unless this is a delayed action virus, I don't know how that is possible... The only thing I downloaded recently was a plugin for a game: it had many positive comments, so that can't be a virus... What do I do?

NOTE: I am writing this on a seperate computer. For obvious reasons.

First, I wouldn't recommend iAntiVirus. It ***** and not worth it. There are better ones out there that are not in the App store such as Avast. Second, to my knowledge Mac viruses does not cause applications to close but it will mostly cause performance issues or whatever it's programmed to do. Third, I would recommend you boot into recovery mode(CMD+R) use Disk Utility to verify your disk to make sure there are no issues with the file structure of your hard drive, then verify and repair any permission errors. Also, if you can boot up and log in normally, check to see what applicaionts or other items are loading. Go to System Preferences-->Users&Groups-->select your user account. On the right select Login Items and remove what you don't need to load automatically.

Macs don't get viruses. You can get Malware but you have to download and install it with your Macs administrator approval. So AV software is not needed and often causes more problems then it creates...especially Norton products for Mac. Very well known to cause big problems. Please uninstall it using Norton's uninstaller.

Can you tell us how much RAM (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the  in your title bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.

We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.

If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.

If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:

We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

There are no Mac viruses.

Multiple comments here...

First, regarding iAntivirus, note that it doesn't do a very good job of detecting malware. (See Mac anti-virus detection rates.) However, it also won't cause any of the problems you're experiencing. Since it comes from the App Store, sandboxing limitations will prevent it from installing or doing anything that will cause system-wide instability.

As to Avast, note that it does better than iAntivirus, but is far from the best anti-virus software available for Macs, and it has a history of lots of false positives. I would recommend choosing Sophos above all other anti-virus options, if you want to have anti-virus software.

You mention a plug-in for a game... you cannot rule out that it is malicious or just plain lousy just because of reviews, though. They could be fake or paid-for with perks like free upgrades. What plug-in and what game?

As to generalized advice for curing your problems, see my Mac Performance Guide. Most of the fixes described there also apply to issues beyond simple performance issues.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Enter the name of the crashed application (Safari) or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

Step 2

Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Hello,

I'm having a similar (or the same) problem. An application (BetterTouchTool) is shutting down at random intervals of time, ranging from a few minutes to ten or more. I don't get a notification message or any popups, the icon in my menubar just disappears and the program's functions stop working.

I checked the Colsole error logs, and couldn't find anything definitive, but I'm not familiar with what any of the logs mean. I really hope you can help me figure this out so I don't need to take it in.

This same list of entries seems to be generated whenever the app closes it and I have to re-open it:
