imac 5.1 pass through not working

Can anyone help me get 5.1 pass through sound out of my iMac?

I have a video file I have created with a 5.1 sound track.

I have a 2009 imac, 27 inch. running Lion

I have connected the imac to a Marantz AV receiver, using the toslink cable.

The sound plays but the AV receiver will on read a STEREO signal.

If I stream the exact same file to my apple TV via itunes then the AV receiver can read the 5.1 sound.

I am guessing that there is something set up wrong on the imac.

Anyone know where I am going wrong?

Cheers

imac, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

I have the same problem with my 27" late 2009 iMac. I am unable to output surround sound throught the digital optical output using a toslink cable with an adapter. But what I do to output surround sound is use the minidisplay port. I connect a minidisplay port to HDMI cable to my iMac and the HDMI input on my reciever. Check out my post about outputting surround sound from your Mac.
