I am unable to connect a VGA projector to the latest iPad with ret.

I have attempted to connect my 3rd gen iPad to an Epson VGA projector using a connector with an lightening adaptor. I got the message that it was not optimized for iPad. Is there a solution other an purchasing new equipment?
