Purchased a new IPOD shuffle today, and I tunes will not bring up any promts to sync and load music, also when looking to contact support they said to have the serial number ready, well that created a whole other set of problems for a half blind 61 y. o?

Purchased a I Pod Shuffle today, can not get any prompts to come up when connected to my Lap top,, I did all of the things that I was told to do, as far as loading all of the latest software in my PC and into Itunes, even went as far as exchanging the ipod, still nothing, and as I was going to contact support, they said to have the serial # ready, well I had enough of a problem finding a magnifing glass let alone a serial number, anyway, that's where I"m at after frustrating hours of fun. any help would be deeply appriciated.
