mail is not connecting with pop servers

Question 1.- I have two email addresses that I manage with Mail. Both are POP. Suddenly Mail stopped connecting with both of them. I erased an account and can't set up the new one because it gives me an error message to check my user name and password. On the other hand, my iphone is working fine with both servers. Support people at one of the providers couldn't help me.

Can somebody help me?

Question 2.- When I set up my Prodigy account, it automatically shows as "Yahoo POP". Prodigy has nothing to do with Yahoo so, anybody knows why this happens?

Thank you!!!

Re. Q1:

You might have gone through the details with your ISP already, but still: Usually this is due to incorrect settings for SSL yes/no and/or port numbers, quite often also requiring different servers to be entered depending on SSL.

Triple-check? 😉 Compare settings on Mac and iPhone directly and one by one... something's got to be different.

Thank you LousyFool I deleted both accounts and tried to create new ones. From the beggining of the set up process Mail cannot connect to the POP servers, neither of them, so it doesn't even give me the chance to set up SSL or ports, right nor wrong. I'm stuck! and I'm not sure if uninstalling and reinstalling Mail would work. Don't even know how to do it. Maybe reverting Mail to factory settings and start from scratch would help but I don't know how to do that either.

:-(

Do you mind telling (no details compromising your privacy required):

- server name(s) for incoming and outgoing mail

- port numbers

- SSL yes/no

as per what your ISP told you? No other parameters, please.

Is there any discrepancy to the settings in your iPhone?

At this point, I don't think it's a problem with Mail or the OS, so don't worry about needing to re-install anything here and now.

No problem:

Incoming server:

pop.prodigy.net.mx

Port: 110

Outgoing:

smtp.prodigy.net.mx

Port: Default

SSL: No

I have another email with a POP/SMTP server, and that is: mail.tagra.com.mx both, for incoming and outgoing

Haven't checked anything with the ISP

No discrepancies with my iPhone

I didn't mention this before, but since Mountain Lion, neither app like Calendars, Addressbook, and others has been able to connect with this server.

I really appreciate your effort to help me

Tried pinging the Prodigy servers, no response. The web server doesn't respond, either.

Ditto with Tagra, only the browser reported that the web server doesn't even exist.

Aside from this, and facing the fact that your iPhone can communicate with them, how do you connect with the Internet?

Mac: Through a router, I guess, wired Ethernet or WiFi. What DNS server(s) do you use? Check under System Preferences -> Network, select the connection with the green dot in the left pane, then see the DNS server(s) in the right pane.

iPhone: 3G, I assume. What if you go on-line with it through the same router via WiFi, if possible? Would you still be able to receive and send mail?

If you can access Prodigy's website, you should look up their setup instructions. Or contact their support staff. Ideally they tell you IP addresses in numeric form (e.g. 123.456.789.001) for the mail servers, which you could then use instead of the .com.mx ones.

And maybe verify with your ISP if you are using the correct DNS server(s)... though you can also find generic ones by googling.

I'm doing my emailing through their respective websites:

http://webmail2.prodigy.net.mx

and

http://webmail.tagra.com.mx

I connect with WiFi and I have the same problem at home and at the office. Both with the same internet provider.

The right pane on Networks says Wi-Fi connected to infinitum257f and has the IP address 192.168.1.111.

Airport/Networks/Advanced/DNS shows 192.168.1.254 and shows no domains

My iPhone is the 4.

Just tried and now I can't send anything from the server Tagra from my iphone either!! What a mess!! It's telling me the server does not allow relaying.

I already talked to their support staff and they say that as long as the settings are correct, the problem is not on their side and they can't dig any deeper not even if they wanted... company policy.

Weird thing is everything was working fine until last thursday...

Many thanks again for trying

Okay, now we're a bit further... I hope...

First,

Just tried and now I can't send anything from the server Tagra from my iphone either!! What a mess!! It's telling me the server does not allow relaying.

that's easy: You must be trying to send email with or from a different address (e.g. xyz@prodigy.net.mx) by using the Tagra SMTP server (mail.tagra.com.mx). Most SMTP servers don't like that and protest.

So, on your iPhone, go to Settings and the Prodigy and any other non-Tagra account, and make sure that not mail.tagra.com.mx but the correct outgoing mail server is chosen! Only your Tagra account must use Tagra servers, no other one!

For iPhone setup see e.g. this Prodigy iPhone setup.

That should work again.

Now back to your Mac.

Your trouble could be the result of some hiccup in a DNS server. So, you'll make one addition and one change to be safe. No worries, it's nothing critical, I'll try to explain here:

1) I guess the current DNS entry in your Mac (192.168.1.254) is your router's IP address, and in the router are DNS addresses stored. To be safe, please add in Network -> Advanced -> DNS under DNS server also these two numbers: 200.33.146.193 and 200.33.146.201, above the old number, and each one in its own line. These two are some of Prodigy's DNS servers. So, it should read now:

200.33.146.193

200.33.146.201

192.168.1.254

Okay! This will make sure that your Mac uses Prodigy DNS servers, no matter what's in your router, but the router stays in as well.

2) In Apple Mail -> Preferences -> Prodigy account, replace the mail server names in text format with their IP addresses in number format. It's the same, but avoids certain trouble with DNS servers.

For the Incoming Mail Server, make it: 148.235.52.179

For the Outgoing Mail Server, make it: 148.235.52.32

Again, it's the same servers, only in number format. And you can always change it back, only we have reason to hope that with the numbers it'll work.

All other settings incl ports etc must remain the same, e.g. the same as in the iPhone instructions.

Now close all apps, and restart the Mac.

And now try if Apple Mail works for your Prodigy account... I'm crossing my fingers...

Nov 24, 2012 6:20 PM in response to LousyFool

Iphone didn't work. Prodigy sending and receiving OK. Tagra receiving but not sending. See attachment "iphone nightmare"

Mail prodigy account is receiving but not sending. Haven't created the Tagra account. See attachments "Mail

nightmare" 1 & 2

You've made such an effort I feel sorry already. Feel free to quit anytime ok? Thank you!

Hey, I'm replying to a previous post, not to your most recent one, so that you are able to edit that last one: you do NOT want your email address and other info out here in the open forever!!!

Go and delete at least the images, please. If you don't have an Edit button at the bottom of that message, then probably because you're on you iPhone or so, but not in Safari on your Mac...

Tip for the future: before posting, use an image editor to make personal data unreadable...

Other than that, don't worry, it's fun! :D

The reason why the iPhone can't send via Tagra is simple: the Tagra SMTP server does not let mails through that are sent from an email address with a different domain than their own. You are using a @hotmail.com address with the tagra.com.mx SMTP server, and the server blocks this. You can only use a @tagra.com.mx email address to send with that server.

In the account, please replace your "Email" address ending in @hotmail.com with one ending in @tagra.com.mx. Then you will be able to send from your Tagra account.

FYI, more and more ISPs block this mail relaying that you were trying. The reason is simple, they want to make it harder for spammers to abuse their servers and use a fake identity, or one that is harder to be traced. Otherwise an ISP risks that his SMTP server is getting blacklisted, meaning most incoming mail servers will refuse mails coming from them.

Accordingly, and this is true for any mail client, iPhone as well as Mac, if you want to send mail from your Hotmail address, you must setup a new, separate account on your device which uses Hotmail servers.

In Apple Mail on your Mac, I am certain that the reason for you being unable to send from the Prodigy account is that you have no authentication specified ("...login not required"). The SMTP server will surely require your account credentials. Otherwise anyone could send mails through that server...

So, in the Prodigy account preferences, under Account Information, click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)... yes, the name in the drop down list there. As the list opens, click on Edit SMTP Server List. In the window that opens, select the Advanced tab. For Authentication, choose Password, and enter your username and password below. OK, and one more Save (I believe) when closing the Preferences, and you should be good to go.

That's it, unless I overlooked something.

Hey,

I found this worked for me, just check your hotmail settings on your MAC are as follows

You change your POP to IMAP like this

Outlook.com does support IMAP and SMTP.

Incoming server:

IMAP: imap-mail.outlook.com

Port: 993

Encrypted Connection: SSL

Outgoing server:

SMTP: smtp-mail.outlook.com

Port: 25 or 587

Encrypted Connection: TLS

Username: Your Username

Password: Your Password

This won't work on mac os x mail unless you disable pop in your outlook.com account first. If you have mac os x mail, and you don't disable pop in your outlook.com account first, mail will automatically setup pop and smtp.
