Question

White iMac 5,1 maximum RAM to install

Is there any reason to install 4GB in a machine that only uses 3GB, e.g., faster access with the same RAM installed in both slots?

Or should I take Apple's spec literally, and only take it to 3GB, which would cost me less?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You can do either, but the iMac will indeed only use 3 GB of the installed RAM. I would probably go with which ever combination is cheaper to purchase from the vendor.
