I cant update iPhoto now that apple replaced my imac hard drive

Had the hard drive replaced in my imac (free 1TB replacement from Apple). The App store is telling me I have an update available for iphoto but when I try to install it I get a message box saying "You have updates available for other accounts. To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it." I have no other accounts that I am aware of. I have tried to download the updated seperatelt and when I try to update it tells me I need to update through the app store. I've already had to bring my imac back to apple because they left the WIFI card unplugged after they installed the new hard drive. And it is not easy to contact them without shelling out for an applecare contract even if you want to discuss their mistake. Any ideas?

iMac (27-inch Late 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto 9.4.1

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

Probably it's hidden. Go to App Store > Featured > Account > Show hidden files and show iPhoto, so you'll be able to update the program

Thanks for the quick response. I tried this and I dont see any option in the account page to show hidden files. Are you referencing the account link that's in the Quick Links box on the Featured page?

I refer to that. Go to App Store > Purchases and check if iPhoto is there

It isn't there. I didn't get iphoto from the app store originally. I got it when I got my imac in 2009. After I got the hard drive repaired and booted up the imac I got an update notice from the app store that I had 2 updates available, one for Mountain lion and one for iphoto. Mountain lion updated but I keep getting the accounts error message when trying to update iphoto. I dont see anything in the release notes that I care about. If you know a way to get rid of the update notification that would help me as well.

It's an error. Open Launchpad, hold Option key and press X button above iPhoto. Then, insert the Applications DVD that came with your computer and install iPhoto. Don't forget to update it to the most recent version

I dug up my application disk and reinstalled iphoto. The app store had me update it to version 8.2. Now I cant access any of my photos. When iphoto starts up it says the database in incompatible and iphoto needs to be updated. The app store is no longer giving me notification to update to version 9.4.1 or 2 anymore. But I cant access my photos.

If your computer cam with iPhoto '09 (version 8.x.x) and you had iPhoto 9.1.4 (iPhoto '11) as your profile states then you have purchased an upgrade - with iLife '11 DVD (if so install from that) or from the App store (in the purchased apps list)

I have not purchased ilife. I've been using iphoto for years and dont recall ever buying it from the app store. I've been using the version on the snow leopard disks that has been periodically updated over the years. I restored my version of 9.4.1 from my time machine backups. I expect to get notified in a week that there is an updater available that I wont be able to install, I regret ever bringing in my imac to have the hard drive replaced. It goes against a fundamental rule - If it works dont fix it!

But iPhoto does not come on a SL disk - or any other OS disk - it comes with a new computer - any version that did not come on the computer must be purchased

When I bought my 27" imac in Dec 2009 it came with two disks, one for the OS ( ver 10.6.1) and one called applications install DVD. That is how I got iphto on this mac. I do have the snow leopard disk, it is a single disk with no application disk. I did not upgrade to Lion, but have upgraded to Mountain Lion.I have been failthful updating the product. I do not remember ever purching it seperately, I doubt if I'd do that since I use it only sparingly. The version I have (9.4.1) works OK for what I use it for. The only issue I have is since Apple replaced the hard drive in my imac due to recall, the app store icon in the dock has a 1 on it telling me there is an update to iphoto. I find this irratating. I cannot install it due to some account issue. I have not pirated SW. I did not download the version of iphoto somewhere. I have faithfully updated my software via software update for years. If its not supposed to be possible to go from version 8.1 to 9.4.1 without buying it, I cannot explain that. Thanks for trying to help, I guess I'll wait until I get a new imac to get this issue resolved.

Right - iPHoto is on Disk2 - and it would be iPhoto 09 (version 8.x.x - 8.1.2 is the latest version of iPhoto '09)

The OS upgrades are just that - OS upgrades - no iLife applications on them - not on SL, L or ML

The version I have (9.4.1) works OK for what I use it for.

Good - but iPhoto '11 (version 9.x.x) is a purchased upgrade from iPhoto '09 that came with your computer - some place you either purchased iLife '11 or purchased fomr the App store - have you gone to the App store, logged in under your Apple ID and looked at purchased Apps? - it is either there or on an iLife DVD y0ou purchased

iPhoto '11 is $15 at the App store

I checked my purchases from the app store, no ilife, no iphoto. I would not have purchased iphoto. I rarely use it on the imac, I just make photo playlists that I access on my ipad.

I didn't mean to imply iphoto was associated with OS upgrade. I photo has been getting upgraded through Software Update. I dont appreciate the insinuation that I am either senile (You purchased iphoto or ilife in the past) or dishonest. I'll live with the stupid red 1 that appears on the app store icon. Next time I get a recall notice from apple I'll just ignore it. Not only did I have to bring my computer back twice to have this free hard drive upgrade done (they unplugged the wifi card and forgot to plug it back in) but now I have this software issue and you want me to spend money to fix it.

Sorry - no implications of any sort - just facts - your computer came with iPhoto '09 - your profile says that you had iPhoto '11 (you may not have reported that correctly but given that that all we have I use it) - the only way that is possible is via a purchase

I am experiencing essentially the same problem. I got my iMac in 2009 and got iPhoto '09 at that time. A few months ago I did upgrade to iPhoto '11 via the App Store. Then I had my hard drive replaced. I had cloned my hard drive before taking it in using Super Duper and was planning to clone it back when I got it home. However, before I restored my backup I coped the contents of the new drive into my user folder (I thought maybe I would need it).

Anway, after the restore I had a copy of iPhoto in my /Applications folder (from the original drive clone) _and_ a copy in my user folder (from the new drive data installed by the Apple store people.

The iPhoto version in my /Applications folder is 9.4.2

The iPhoto version in my /Home/<user>/NewHd/Applications folder is 9.3.2

The App store is trying to tell me I need to update iPhoto to 9.4.1 but is failing when I try to do so with an error message that says, "These apps cannot be accepted on this computer."

My theory is that the App store is seeing the 9.4.1 version via some sort of file watching and it thinks I need to update. However when I do so it must be missing some sort of App store meta data and then refuses.

I have since _deleted_ the iPhoto.app in my user folder but the App store still says it needs to update! Very annoying. My next step is to reboot the machine but I'm in the middle of something else and can't do that right now.

There must be some way to fix this!

[edit] Corrected the version of iPhoto that was in my <user>/... folder.

That's not an iPhoto issue, but instead an App Store one. Contact App Store support. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store Window.
