Q: Sound balance reverting to right channel

I have a 2011 Macbook Air that I connect to a nonThunderbolt 27" Cinema Display via the Thunderbolt/USB ports from my Macbook Air.

Lately I've noticed that when I disconnect the Macbook and reconnect to the Cinema Display, the sound then comes from the right speaker only. Looking into system preferences the sound balance always reverts to the right channel only. I'm choosing the LED Cinema Display device for sound output.

No matter how many times I then correct this, the process repeats itself every time I disconnect and reconnect, I have to manually correct the sound balance.

Anyone else experienced similar?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I have the same issue with a MacBook Pro (early 2011) connected to the Apple 27" LED Cinema Display.

The balance resets itself to the right channel only (balance slider moved fully to the right in System Preferences > Sound) after every restart, although not after sleeping.

The problem persists after installing LED Cinema Display Firmware Update 1.1 and restarting.

I reported the matter to AppleCare recently, but they haven't yet been able to identify the cause.

If everyone affected could please report it, Apple will hopefully dedicate the required resources to resolve the matter for all of us. As the issue seems to affect different types of hardware (I've also seen this reported, for example, by a Mac Mini user), I'd perhaps suggest submitting the feedback under the OS X category:

As hardware and software are covered by different teams at Apple, you could play safe by also reporting it under your hardware category - choices are here:

I also have the same issue with the sound balance shifting all the way to the right after reconnecting the LED Cinema display. Doesn't seem to matter if I set the Audio Output to DisplayPort or USB.

I'm having the same problem, but the sound is reverting to my left speaker.

If anyone finds a fix, please let us know.

Same problem here; sound reverts to right speaker every time I connect a 2011 13" MBP to a 2011 27" iMac and hit Command+F2. Both are on the latest Mountain Lion release (10.8.2)

I've got a 24" LED Cinema Display (circa mid-2009) connected to a late 2011 15" MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.5, and in the last few days I've noticed that the sound is noticeably fainter on both channels. In fact, at volumes below five boxes/bars, it's inaudible, no matter how high I set the output volume under preferences. I don't recall it being that way before. It also sounds stronger/louder on the right than the left, but the balance in preferences is set squarely in the middle.

I've unplugged the DVI and USB plugs and plugged them back in, to no effect. Sound coming through the Mac's audio jack is fine. Ditto for the Mac's speakers.

    What gives?

But there's no way to provide feedback on a Cinema Display. Every other product seems to be listed, but not that one!

I have the same issue with a MacBook Pro Retina 2012 connected to the Apple 27" LED Cinema Display 2010 via Thunderbolt. I have installed the OSX 10.8.2. I notice this problem around 1 month ago and I didn't do anything waiting for a solve with a OS update.

Last few days things seemed to have reverted back to normal behaviour, I am now getting normal sound balance after redocking.

I don’t remember any significant updates from Apple in the last week or so. I did however take my laptop on holiday, switching off power completely for my Cinema Display. After coming back things now seem normal so this may have contributed to the resolution. May be worth a shot if you had similar issue.
