Sound balance reverting to right channel

I have a 2011 Macbook Air that I connect to a nonThunderbolt 27" Cinema Display via the Thunderbolt/USB ports from my Macbook Air.

Lately I've noticed that when I disconnect the Macbook and reconnect to the Cinema Display, the sound then comes from the right speaker only. Looking into system preferences the sound balance always reverts to the right channel only. I'm choosing the LED Cinema Display device for sound output.

No matter how many times I then correct this, the process repeats itself every time I disconnect and reconnect, I have to manually correct the sound balance.

Anyone else experienced similar?

Same problem here in Sydney. Sound reverts to right channel when plugged/unplugged into Cinema Display.

I have the current MacBook Pro 15" Retina and am plugging the 27' Cinema Display via the Thunderbolt connector.

I've tried powering off/on my Cinema Display, and the problem still exists, every time its unplugged and re-plugged. Downright annoying.

Doesn't seem like there's a fix here.

That's interesting LEMusic - I have the same MB 15" Pro and you're right, the second Thunderbolt port seems to behave correctly. Excellent deduction! I'm guessing thats maybe why Apple haven't issused a software patch - its probably hardware related. Anyway, for me this works, so thanks.

This problem bugged for me ages, then about three months ago it just disappeared. So I never found the how to solve the problem, but it's gone now. No changes to my MacBook Pro, just the regular updates.

I have the same issue with a MacBook Pro (early 2011) connected to the Apple 27" LED Cinema Display.

The balance resets itself to the right channel only (balance slider moved fully to the right in System Preferences > Sound) after every restart, although not after sleeping.

The problem persists after installing LED Cinema Display Firmware Update 1.1 and restarting.

I reported the matter to AppleCare recently, but they haven't yet been able to identify the cause.

If everyone affected could please report it, Apple will hopefully dedicate the required resources to resolve the matter for all of us. As the issue seems to affect different types of hardware (I've also seen this reported, for example, by a Mac Mini user), I'd perhaps suggest submitting the feedback under the OS X category:

As hardware and software are covered by different teams at Apple, you could play safe by also reporting it under your hardware category - choices are here:

I've got a 24" LED Cinema Display (circa mid-2009) connected to a late 2011 15" MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.5, and in the last few days I've noticed that the sound is noticeably fainter on both channels. In fact, at volumes below five boxes/bars, it's inaudible, no matter how high I set the output volume under preferences. I don't recall it being that way before. It also sounds stronger/louder on the right than the left, but the balance in preferences is set squarely in the middle.

I've unplugged the DVI and USB plugs and plugged them back in, to no effect. Sound coming through the Mac's audio jack is fine. Ditto for the Mac's speakers.

What gives?
