my IPOD memory disappeared!!!!!!!

I am SO fed up with IPOD and APPLE I can barely handle it.
I am on my 3rd IPOD right now after having to send in 2 other IPODS because they broke.
Well, I was riding in the car the other day listening to music when all of a sudden it froze! Not terribly unusual, so I did my reset, which seems to be a VERY regular tatic in order to get this piece of junk to work properly, and all of a sudden it said I had NO music in my IPOD.
So now am I at a loss. How could my ipod's memory be completely wiped clean?

I might not be that frustrated, but I have my music spread out between about 3 different computers. (My parents, my new computer and my brother's computer)
in order to get ALL my music back onto the IPOD it takes days and is SUCH a pain to figure out what music is where and what music I'm missing. To attempt to recreate my playlists is pointless, I have to start from scratch.

Any one have any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm really fed up with apple. I spent over $400 on this device which has proved to not be worth the money at ALL!

Thank you!!!

I'm not as disgruntled as this customer, but I must admit I'm not sold on the iPod yet. My RCA Lyra isn't fancy but it is reliable and very versatile. It will install itself (no software required) on any Windows XP installation in the world. The restriction of needing to run iTunes is typical for Apple (what if people can't install iTunes at work?). But anyway, I digress. I have a brand new 4 GB Nano. I admit I'm an iPod noob, so I might be missing something here, but as far as I can tell my memory just disappeared. All my songs and playlists appear to be gone. I didn't know how to turn my iPod off when I first got it (I know, an on/off switch would just be too butch for apple), so maybe my battery got completely drained? But I wouldn't think iPods would lose all their memory from a low battery? Does anybody know if this is a known issue? As far as I can tell, my iPod has reverted to the state it was in when I first turned it on.

Further to this, I've just connected to I-tunes for the first time sinmce my music went bye-bye. I get this message: "The file or directory iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk utility." So it looks like I've managed to corrupt my file system already. I've only owned this thing for a week! I'll run chkdsk and see what happens.
I was using my iPod with an in-car charger/FM transmitter that plugs into a lighter socket. Are there any known issues with those devices that could have contributed to this. What are the known issues that contribute to iPod file corruption?

ok. So I ran chkdsk from the windows command prompt -> 'chkdsk G: /f' (My Ipod was drive G:) and it did report some encouraging stuff:

Windows is verifying files and folders...
\iPod_Control\iTunes\iTunesDB first allocation unit is not valid. The entry will be truncated.
File and folder verification is complete.
Convert lost chains to files (Y/N)? y
253952 bytes in 2 recovered files.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

If any Apple vets think I could have restored those songs and playlists somehow, I'd be happy to hear how.

3,997,876,224 bytes total disk space.
40,960 bytes in 10 hidden files.
16,384 bytes in 4 folders.
21,270,528 bytes in 15 files.
3,976,544,256 bytes available on disk.:

But I don't see my songs anywhere in this file system. I had about 400MB of music on the iPod and everything seems to be gone. So now I've completed Apple's 5 R's by restoring my Ipod to factory with the iPod Updater, hopefully now I have a healthy file system again. I'm a windows user, so I'm used to keeping backups of my stuff. I guess I'll just have to set aside 4 GB of hard drive space to mirror my iPod files. I'm glad I got this wake-up call early in the game. The next time this happens I'll just restore and manually dump the files back on. Never had a single file system problem with my Lyra. Oh well.
