USB connection to music keyboard

Dear All

The Garageband says connecting the music keyboard to the USB port of MacBook Pro. Does it mean connecting my MacBook Pro to the Phones/Output socket of my music keyboard via a special USB cable? What is this cable called? Where can I get this kind of cable? Please help me here.

Where do I connect the sustain pedal to my music keyboard? Do they sell all in one kind of thing?

With best wishes

I want to be able to connect my keyboard to my MacBook Pro so that I can interact with the software GarageBand. Do I need MIDI support and anything else? What else should I look out for if I buy another keyboard?

So I use this mini controller in conjunction with my existing keyboard or just use the controller keyboard to play with my GarageBand in the MacBook Pro?

May I also ask you about a Sustain Pedal Casio SP-3? Can it be connected to my existing keyboard Casio CTK-1150 via the Phones/Output socket because it uses a standard jack?

Does your keyboard support MIDI via USB? If not then you may need an adaptor like this:

What keyboard do you have? Is it the Casio CTK-1150 mentioned in your tagline? If so then it doesn't appear to have MIDI out at all according to the specifications here:

You will need to purchase a keyboard that supports MIDI.

Can I buy a sustain petal Casio SP-3 to connect to the phones/output socket of my keyboard Casio CTK-1150 because the SP-3 has standard jack?

Yes, you will need MIDI if you want to use the keyboard as a controller for GarageBand. Select one which uses a USB cable for MIDI rather than the old 5-pin DIN connectors, then you won't need an adaptor. I think most modern MIDI keyboards have USB these days, but make sure. Other things to consider:

  1. Do you need full size keys, and how many octaves do you want? i.e. are you already, or intend to become, a very good keyboard player, or do you just have basic skills. If you're very good, or intend to develop your keyboard playing skills, then you probably want full size keys and at least four octaves. If you're not a very good player but just want to play melodies and basslines separately into GarageBand then a smaller keyboard with mini-keys may well suffice.
  2. Do you need the keyboard to produce sound independently? i.e. do you want to use the keyboard separately like a piano/organ or do just need it to control GarageBand or other external MIDI devices. If the former then look for internal sound generation and built in speakers.

A mini-keyboard that's just a controller will obviously be much cheaper and can be had for £60 or £70 (here in UK). A full-size keyboard with on-board sound production and built-in amplification and speakers will obviously be more expensive.

If you just want a controller keyboard then this is one that I can recommend:

It's modestly priced and comes with the added benefit of tap-pads that you can use for entering drum/percussion parts into GarageBand.

I just ordered the mini controller that you have recommended and do I still need a USB cable for it to be used with the GarageBand in my MacBook Pro? If I need a USB cable, can this one do?

You don't need that cable. According to Akai's web-site a USB cable is included with the keyboard:

Look under "FAQs" then "How does this connect to my computer".

Just use the controller keyboard with GarageBand.

The Casio CTK-1150 doesn't appear to have a connector for a sustain pedal according to the specs here:

Also, if you click on 'Options' they don't seem to offer a sustain pedal as an accessory, so I would say no it's not supported. Certainly not via the headphone output as that won't accept any kind of control input.
