Kernel Panics occurring with no apparent pattern in Mountain Lion X

Greetings.

Last week, I have upgraded my OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Since then I have repeatedly suffered kernel panic crashes, once, twice or three times a day, whilst working in any of the following applications: Final Cut Pro 7 (in a separate folder in Application), Final Cut Pro X, Compressor 3 (again in a separate folder in Applications) and 4. I usually have more than one application open at the time, such as Photoshop and After Effects CS5.5 in the background, though idle at the time of these crashes, and Safari and Mail. I note that I also have Automap installed which application insists on launching (and remaining "alive") even though I have not launched either Garageband or Logic. (See thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4345612?answerId=19901443022#19901443022)

Anyway, my diagnostics and counter measures have included, more or less in the order listed:

- verifying and repairing disk permissions;

- veryfing the disk (from the recovery disk after a restart cmd+R);

- performing a MemTest;

- clean re-install of OSX Mountain Lion (again from the recovery disk);

- zapping PRam (restart cmd+alt+p+r, about six chimes);

- removing varoious login items (including Transmit, LaCie, Livescribe and Bamboo items);

Still the kernel panics persisted. They often seem to occur at drag (and drop) actions between application or finder windows. However, they have also occurred just like that, during an export of video from FCP7 or a finder copy action without any mouse or keyboard input.

In the end, I have completely restored a system from the Time Machine from a week earlier. This probably means that the login items are back as is the original Mountain Lion installation.

So, today the iMac crashed again. I will paste the panic report below.

I hope all this makes sense. Please forgive me, I am an experienced Mac user but I do not have a technical background in IT, nor an aptitude for it.

Does anybody have an idea to what the problem might be and what I should possibly do to correct it? I appreciate any reader for spending their time.

So thank you.

Best Regards, Huib J. Lirb

Dear Mende1 (and other readers),

Unfortunately another kernel Panic occurred even after the removal of Sophos (using the proper uninstall app). Does the new panic report hold a good clue? Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. Best regards, Huib J. Lirb

Dear all,

Just in case the panic reports show a pattern I am unable to discover, I hereby attach the report of the latest kernel panic. This occurred as I dragged the trim tool in a clip in FCPX:

As before, thank you for your time.

Best regards Huib J. Lirb

I am actually running the same version of Sophos that you had installed with no problems. I think the fact that it crashed while loading the Sophos kernel extension was probably not the fault of that kernel extension. However, you've got no other third-party kernel extensions installed, so at this point, the problem is probably caused either by a badly corrupt system or a hardware issue. You should probably run Apple Hardware Test, though be aware that it cannot catch all possible hardware issues, so a "pass" doesn't necessarily mean you don't have a hardware issue.

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your reply. I had come to understand that my machine, now that is has been equipped with Mountain Lion, should use the internet recovery option (from the recovery disk after a restart cmd+R),

but apparently I was msitaken. I will try to locate any original DVD's and see if these contain a hardware test. I will let you know how I will have fared. Thank you again.

Best regards, Huib J. Lirb

PS. I have suffered another three kernel panics in FCPX today: (a) a panic as I dragged clips in trim mode; another as I clicked on the QuickTime Player 7 in the finder (with FCPX open as well as AE and Soundtrack Pro); and another as I dragged clip across the timeline in FCPX, and yet another as I dragged a selection in a clip from the events browser.

So, the hardware test is next. After that, I guess it will be the Mac-Repairman.

Thanks.

Nov 24, 2012 5:38 AM in response to thomas_r.

Dear Thomas,

I was unaware of this but I found the original installation disk for the AHT and ran it (restart pressing D). (And it was nostalgic to see the old Mac OS style icons and progress bar.)

The extended test hit upon an error: 4MEM/60/40000000 : 0x85f59818. So I guess that means I have a faulty memory in one of the slots?

This, incidentally, shows, I would say, that the MemTest application I had run – recommended by others on one of these boards – and which allowed the memory to pass cannot be trusted to provide a secure completely.

So, it is good to know, in future, that I have the option of running a Apple Hardware Test. I will now proceed to contact the reseller (I have AppleCare on the machine).

I thank you, Thomas, and Mende1 very much for your kind help.

Nov 24, 2012 8:11 AM in response to etresoft

Dear etresoft,

Thank you for your reply. The reports of additional kernel panics did in fact list msdosfs as last loaded kext. (Whatever that is.)

Thank you, but does this mean that there may be some other action that I should perform instead of (or in addition to) having the memory slots checked?

Best regards and with compliments, Huib J. Lirb

I have removed two modules of memory and ran te AHT again. This time, the machine passed. I will order replacement modules from Apple soon.

It would be unusual for two modules to go out at the same time, but if you're Mac needs matched pairs then it would probably be best to replace both at the same time, although it isn't required.

Apple probably doesn't have a lifetime guarantee on it's memory, but most third parties do and it will be much cheaper than what Apple will sell you.

Nov 26, 2012 12:12 AM in response to MadMacs0

Thanks for your reply, MasMacs0.

Yes, one of the two modules I have taken out may well still have been intact and fully functional. Still, I have eliminated two matching memory modules at the same time, without a second thought really, because I have learned long ago that when it comes to memory, it is always best to think in pairs.

Cheers!
