Raw Images (Nikon D700 NEFs) suddenly turn unsupported

Hi there,

for some of my managed Nikon D700 NEFs I start geeting an 'unsupported image format' error. I worked with those files a couple of months ago and everything was fine, no errors. So, the problem must have came up recently. The files wont show up in Preview neither but open fine in Capture NX2 which brings me to the assumption, that it is an OS X raw compatability issue.

I browsed through the related discussions but couldn't find a way that resolved the problem. What puzzles me is the fact, that obviously only few people are experiencing similar issues. I'm afraid, that something might be "broken" in my system installation. To double check this I would like to provide one of my unrecognized NEF files:

If this file works for you, it's not an Aperture issue, but a single problem on my (few) machine(s). The answer to this would be of great help in finding the right fix. Any feedback is highly appreciated! Thanks!

Frank

Frank,

if you look at this list: OS X Mountain Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats

you will see, that your camera's raw is directly by Mountain Lion, and not by the latest raw support.

If it were a problem with the raw conversion, you would have to reinstall the OS; not the latest raw support, I guess.

I am still concerned about this "some"

for some of my managed Nikon D700 NEFs

How many images are we talking about? If it is only a few, the problem can be something completely different.

Did you have time to check from a different account with standard setting?

Same problem.

That is bad news. Then we can assume, that nothing in your main account and in your main Aperture library is causing this. That looks like a sstem wide trouble - MacOS, Aperture, plug-ins, helper utilities, haxies, hardware failure. Have you installed any other software lately, that has installer and may have changed your system? I'd run a hardware test over night, just to be sure.

I thought of something while I was out. Have you tried running the Aperture repair tools? The tool is involked at the startup of Aperture, by holding CMD and ALT then clicking the Aperture start icon. A window should appear as follows:

I would run them in the order shown. Each time you run one of them you will have to quit and restart Aperture.

Jerry: I ran Aperture's repair tools already several times with no result.

Leonie: My hardware configuration seems to be ok. No errors there.

I'm still wondering, why your Aperture info windows show also "Digital Camera RAW Support 4010 - Build 40.10" besides the "Digital Camera RAW 4.01 - Build 666.5". I only have the latter?? I was searching for any information about this in vain until now.

I'm sorry I can only imagine how frustrating this is. This might be a computer problem.

As I mentioned earlier, it's possible for a segiment of a hard drive to go bad and corrupt data. If that happened and the data was in the sectioin that stored the program for interperting the RAW, you might experience behaivor like your seeing. There is a report on Aperture Expert where images on a remote drive became "unsupported format" after being moved to a remote drive. The problem turned out to be a bad firewire cable.
