My new iphone 5 is asking for a "password for voicemail", i didnt have one on my previous iphone. my phone stuck on this message...any ideas?

Check this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1687 and if it doesn't help, you may need to contact your carrier. They handle voicemail and passwords.
Actually you did have one on the previous iPhone, but the carrier may have assisted with the setup.
You need to contact your carrier most likely, voicemail is a carrier feature.
