HELP! Timeline Completely Gone.

While working on a project, a number of our video files became corrupted. Now, we've got some 60 missing files and all corrupted. No RE-LINKING is possible. We're already tried.

Anyway...

We had some other solutions to look at when ALL OF A SUDDEN our project timeline just flat out went Bye-Bye; the whole thing! It's just flat-out gone! We did find the following file:

file://localhost/Volumes/2TB%20DRIVE%204%20BLACK/Final%20Cut%20Projects/CBFSS%20 VERSION%202.0/CurrentVersion.fcpproject

Yes, the CurrentVersion.fcpproject is there in our system AND all of the event files are intact and in fact, show up in the browser. BUT, the timeline is NO WHERE to be found! Whenever we try to restore the CurrentVersion.fcpproject, it does re-lauch FCP X with all of the events in the events browser BUT AGAIN, no timeline, anywhere! The file itself appears to be on my hard drive BUT will NOT manifest itself in my timeline window!

What I am to do? This is a 50 minute film with about 100 + hours of editing into it! AND NOW, NO TIMELINE to show for any of that work. Great! We have the events and we have a CurrentVersion.fcpproject file but nothing more.

Do I just totally reformat our drive and start again? What a major pain, to say the least. Any suggestions. I don't know what to do.

Thanks.

As a first stab: try trashing preferences. (A catch all when FCPX starts acting wonky.) People in this forum suggest a 3rd-party software, Preference Manager.

Simple program. Download it. Store your prefs. Trash. Restore. The whole process will take 5 mins.

Restart FCPX with your restored prefs. If that doesn't work. We'll try something else.

I really appreciate your suggestion. I did download the Prefman, launched it and it did in fact trash my preferences; good. It then gave me the option to restore the preferances but strangely, NOTHING from an eariler date! Just November 23, 2012; that's it. Okay, I did it. Still no good news to report. The timeline is definately AWOL. At this point, I'm even open to spending the money to get the digitalrebellion program to look through everything for it. I honestly don't care if its $138 dollars or $238.00 dollars. I've got a lot of hours into this film edit and I really, frankly, do not want to have to go back to square one and rebuild!

Can we try something else? I'm open to any suggestions, no matter how strange. I promise not to hold you or anyone responsible for any messes I create, in addition to the mess that I've already got on my hands.

In BRIEF, all my ORIGINAL imported files on an external drive got deleted AND trashed! So, when FCP X went to look for the files, of course, they weren't there! All I've got is a bunch of aliases! No QT files. So, I'm right now, using a program to try to "find" all the stuff that got trashed and it may work. I'm hoping so. Maybe this is part of my problem why the Timeline went bye-bye; it just got confused and didn't know up from down and just shut itself off, period. I don't know.

No, Not at all. Nothing was or has been moved. But, as I posted earlier - ALL my original .wav, jpg, mov files - most everything went from the drive to the trash and then from the trash into oblivion. Part of mess I started. Anyway, as I said in my earlier post, I'm using some software now to deeply look into the trash can and find the stuff that's missing. It should be done within an hour or two. I tried it last night with a few things and it did remarkably find some of the lost stuff but to recover it, they wanted $89.00 dollars. OK, look no problem if it will solve the issue. But, right now, I'm holding off to see all my options.

Thanks.

Richard and all involved in this discussion.

Something very interesting, I'm noticing.

I HAVE a FCP X project saved from November 9, 2012. BUT, when I try to open even this file, which I know is find, and in fact, when I try to open ANY earlier projects, even going back to May of 2012, I'm getting an FCP X window that pops up, saying:

User uploaded file

Hummm. Strange.

Sadly (quite sadly) YES, that stuff was the only copy that I had. So dumb. BUT, I DO have all the original capture source tapes. But again, right now, I'm holding my breath that just maybe, this little nifty program that looks deep into my trash, will find all or if not, most of the missing files. I'm holding out hope.

Thanks. Any suggestions on the above post, however, with earlier projects that cannot be opened (and I know these are perfectly intact), maybe I should just REINSTALL FCP X? I won't do anything rash. I'm looking at all my options. Thanks.

Hi Innocentius.

YES, I am TRYING to open the project; any project from earlier dates, from within FCPX. They are not even showing up in the Project Library! And just in case, you ask, I have gone in to make sure that they are in fact available in proper folders. Everything is in order. Just flat-out, my project library that is showing up from within FCPX is showing NOTHING! - just five different drives. That's it. I have all kinds of events in the Event Library, just nothing in the Project Library. Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Thanks Richard.

IF I can recover the trashed media that I'm now looking for through a trash recovery program - I'll know shortly if this is in fact something positive; IF I can get that media back into FCPX by importing it, making a new event...whatever, then I might be able to move forward with solving this issue.

THEN AGAIN, I would like to know WHY my FCP X is not even seeing any earlier projects in the library NOR is it opening any earlier projects when I click on the currentproject.fcpproject backups from earlier dates. This has me very suspicious that MAYBE FCPX is corrupted and needs to be re-installed; maybe. I don't know yet.

Thanks.
