i've done all this, but how do I activate the phone portion?
I have gotten the new iphone 5 set up, all but the calling and messaging feature. How do I do this and deactivate my old phone?

You mean iMessage and FaceTime?
Your carrier should deactivate the service on your old phone. Go into settings, messages, turn on imessages and choose use your apple id for imessages. also, settings, facetime, turn on and choose your apple id for factime.
