Which version of iOS are you using on the 3GS? Also, you need to put both devices (the phone and the vehicle) into discovery mode. On the phone that is turning on Bluetooth, and check the vehicle manual for how to put the vehicle in discovery mode. After that, the phone should "see" the vehicle and they generally ask for a passcode. The vehicle manual should also provide you with that.

If you are using iOS 6.x on the iPhone, it will be using Bluetooth v4.0. You may need to check with the vehicle manufacturer to see if the vehicle supports that version of Bluetooth. What year is the vehicle?

User troubleshooting procedures for the iPhones are restart, reset, restore from a backup and restore as a new device. You need to try those prior to determining if it is a hardware issue. However, if once you get past a reset, I would begin to believe hardware, especially if you cannot get another hands free device to pair. However, just to be sure, you should try all of the 4 steps I mentioned.

It is hard to tell unless you just try it. The newer iPhones have had some difficulty in connecting to some vehicles, however that has been usually traced back to the vehicle manufacturers. iOS 6 uses Bluetooth v4.0 and if the vehicle does not support that, it may not work. That would require you to check with the vehicle manufacturer and see if they have an upgrade to your vehicle.

I have not had any problems with my 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. It worked with my 4S in iOS 5.1.1. and iOS 6 and iOS 6.0.1.

All you can do is try.

This is definately an Iphone problem, not a problem with the cars bluetooth, we upgraded our phones to Samsung galaxy 3's and they paired in a few seconds. Im afraid apple seems to be falling behind as these new phones are far better than our iphones, ( my opinion of course ) now we have to decide between an ipad or a Samsung tablet after all this hassel the Samsung is probably the way to go

bluetooth wont work
