Thanks will make an appointment, unfortunately apple store is 120 miles away so was trying to make sure mine might be affected, and it's Black Friday+++.
My 15" MacBook Pro of about that vintage indicates that all is well by the hardware tests bu will not boot beyond Apple screen, stops with arrow and short horizontal lines.
