iTunes could not connect to the iPod ...

I get the above error message, which mentions the pass code too.

When the Ipod touch starts it hangs on the screen with the apple logo. I'm trying to restore it to get it working again. I'm connecting the Ipod to my PC using USB connection. My computer refuses to recognise the ipod without the pass code being entered. But the ipod won't boot enough to let me enter one. So, I have done a hard reset, disconnected the usb lead, then held home and waited to see the connect message but nothing seems to work. No matter what I try to do I cannot get the PC and ipod to connect fully. I've tried to look at the forums but found nothing that works.

Has anyone got any suggestions or seen this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS. I think its a 4th gen one.

You will have to lose your data to regain use of your iPod. However, you may be able to not update if you:

If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.

If you then restore from iTunes backup the iPod will be updated. I am not sure what will happen if you restore from iCloud backup.

Is there anyway to solve the same problem but without restoring the device? (I don't want the new IOS, or all my current data erased.)
