FLAC Files
I have a bunch of FLAC files I would like to use in iTunes. What is the best way to do this?

Glenn,
As you know, iTunes cannot directly play FLAC. The best thing to do is get a 3rd party converter such as Switch, and create new versions in a format that iTunes can play, such as MP3.
Add the converted files to your iTunes library, and keep the FLAC originals on hand for times when you are using a more capable player.
I took a look and see a converter called Bigasoft FLAC. It says to convert from FALC to M4A. This keeps it loss less, correct? I used to convert WAV's to AAC for Apple, but I guess M4A is is equivalent/better?
Hi Glenn,
Not necessarily. The file extension .m4a is used both for AAC, which is lossy, and Apple Lossless (ALAC), which is lossless.
The Bigasoft page says it can "convert FLAC to Apple Lossless and convert FLAC to M4A." When you use it, make sure you are getting the format you want. Either AAC or ALAC will work in iTunes.
Thanks! I do see that setting so I will give it a try.
Well, the Bigasoft program cuts off songs at 5 minutes unless you pay for a copy of the program. Anyone know of a totally free converter that can convert FLAC to ALAC?
X Lossless Decoder: Lossless audio decoder for Mac OS X - http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html Tip for using: All settings are tucked away in preferences.
I have a PC, doesn't seem to support?
Oops, sorry. 🙂

Check out dbPowerAmp. It is not free but has a free trial.
You could also convert to WAV or AIFF, and then use iTunes to convert the WAV or AIFF to Apple Lossless. That will give you a wider choice of conversion tools.
I'll take a look, thanks!
for pc try Trader's Little Helper...a nifty free program, I turn FLAC>WAV>AAC
Question, FLAC to WAV, lossless?
WAV to AAC, losssy?
Yes
Yes
I think I'll just spring for the Bigasoft program. Thanks!
if you want lossless in iTunes, just load as wav files....I converted FLAC>WAV with TLH, then in iTunes WAV to Apple lossless...what am I missing?
