You have to set up the account first to be assigned the phone number.

You can't set up the account without the number.

Goto settings>about that should show you your mobile data number it will only show you the number if u have the cellular wifi model it won't have a cellular number if u have a wifi iPad only.

Yeah....my bad. The phone number required is just a contact number, not the pad's number.

Once I activated the data service, all was well. And then the wireless number populated.
