Kernel Panic Help

Hi All,

Does anyone have any advice on what might be cause my 27" 2009 (I think) iMac to be having constant Kernel panics, it seems like it's every 30 mins, but I can't think of anything I'm doing that might be causing it.

Cheers,

Dave

Yeah I have got an email about that from Apple. Could that be the cause? I thought I harddrive failure would have presented in a different way (clicking or not booting, etc).

Is there anything specifinc from the logs that I should be looking into? Anything to uninstall or a clear cause etc?

Will look at thse links now.

Cheers,

Dave

What happens if you boot into Safe Modeand operate? I'm guessing the panics may cease. If they do it's likely because of incompatibilities with one or more of the extensions you've installed:

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 5.0 9220.531002

com.vmware.kext.vmnet 3.1.2

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 5.0 9220.531002

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 5.0 9220.531002

com.vmware.kext.vmci 3.1.2

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 5.0 9220.531002

com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.5.1

com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.5.1

com.vmware.kext.vmx86 3.1.2

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 5.0 9220.531002

com.google.filesystems.fusefs 2.0.3

at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 2.2.05

My first guess would be your Google filesystem. Next, running Parallels and VM Fusion together when only one should be in use. Next, would be LittleSnitch. Running in safe mode will disable all of the above to see if in fact one or more are causing the kernel panics.

A Failing Hard Drive can manifest itself in many ways... Some subtle.. Some Obvious.

If your Machine Qualifies for the Replacement... Go for it... You will be glad you did.

I was.

There is nothing specific in the panic log that would suggest a failing drive. However, that does not necessarily mean you don't have a failing drive. Open Disk Utility and select the topmost drive entry then look at the SMART status report in the lower section of the DU window. If SMART says "Verified" that indicates the drive may be OK. Anything else then the drive is failing.

You can also run the Apple Hardware Test and see if it reports any disk related errors. The tests should be run repeatedly for several hours for best results.

Thanks for the help.

It had a kernel panic again and this time it was exactly the point I went to access a new external HDD.

Since the I've tried safe boot and have not had a crash. I've restarted normally with the HDD (Western Digital MyBook 3TB) not plugged in and haven't had a crash again either. I might plug it in again and see if that brings one on.

What steps can I take if this HDD is the cause? Diskwarrior? Warranty of the drive? Does it causing a kernel panic mean it is faulty?

Thanks again for the tips.

Cheers,

Dave

I've alwyas used FAT, the format is compatabile across MAC, Windows, Playstation,, Xbox, Wii, random TVs/DVD players, it just makes more sense for me to use it. I have multiple other dirves that are FAT and work fine, so I dont think that is the issue.

The drive sometimes takes a long time to show up after being plugged in and is sometimes read only.

I might see it it causes a panic next time I plug it in, i've been running fine since unpluggin it. Then I'll try it on my Pro, which has never had a Panic before.

Could there be some reason that the HDD and this certain machine don't mix?

Cheers,

Dave

I've been able to remove most of the suspicious lines. Here's my latest. Not I'm up to Panic #21 up from 14 yesterday.

Little Snitch, Google (MacFUSE), Parellels. I've also removed NTFS-3G and Air Display (aratron) since the last panic.

Is there anything dodgy left?

I'm 90% sure it's is something to do with the drive. I've been able to cause a panic 100% of the time by running 'find .' in the root of the drive. It goes through all the files on the drive and stops around the same point. Is there a file limit? I tried to remove the folders around where it stopped, but it crashed when I tried to empty the trash.

I can do the same thing on my other smaller (2TB or 1TB drives) and it's a lot quicker and causes no Panic.

Still to do:

Test on another MAC (should be able to do today some time)

Get apple to replace internal HDD (long term)

Thanks again so far!

Cheers,

Dave

Will do.

I've tried it without my hub plugged in and it still happens. I was able to use it without issue on my MacBook Pro, which is running Lion. I did a bunch if transfers, used DiskInventory X to create a map of all the files on the drive and "find . > files.txt" to create a 10MB list of all the files around ~160,000 (mostly hidden) from a manual back up I did of my Pro. I deleted a bunch of the files and then put it back in my iMac. Ran "find . > files2.txt" and it has a panic in under a minute.

I wonder if partitioning it into 1 or 1.5TB partitions would have any effect.

Cheers again,

Dave
