At startup, instead of getting the log in screen, I get a grey screen with two disk icons, one being the Mac OS and one being the recovery disk. I am NOT pressing the option button at startup. How can I get it back to starting up with the usual login screen?

Sounds like maybe one of your Option (Alt) keys is sticking or stuck on.
To check, go up on the right side of your Menu Bar, click on the Flag and in the drop down select Show Keyboard Viewer.

System Preferences, Startup disk, reselect your main disk, restart.

This has now been solved by a visit to a Genius Bar - the guy performed a PRAM reset which resolved the issue.
