I am an aspiring piano beginner. On YouTube there are self-instruction videos. I took nine screenshots of different keyboard fingerings and placed them into a Pages layout document. I then saved this document to the Cloud. When I retrieved the document, I get this
every one of those question marks should be a screen shot but the content has vanished. What is going on here?

Did you save the images to your hard drive before inserting them into the Pages document? Otherwise they are just a link to the web location & can disappear if the link breaks, you're not connected to the internet or the original is deleted.

I'm not sure that I can answer your question. I would have thought that if you have taken a screenshot and that screenshot is sitting on your Desktop, complete with a file name, then by definition it is already saved to your hard drive - no ?

Yes, that would be saved.
Click on one of the ? boxes & see what it says the file name is in the metrics inspector. That may help you find them. Pages doesn't link to files but copies them into the document package.
But if someone were to drag an image into a Pages document directly from a web browser, you would get the situation I mentioned before.
This does sound more like the document package has become damaged & is missing the images.
