how to select portion of clip?

In my clip I moved the mouse over it (skimming) to find the right point. I stop the mouse. I adjust to the exact frame using the arrow keys. Now, how do I set the other end of the portion I want to select? If I drag the mouse, it selects from where it was before fine tuning it with the arrow keys. I can't move the mouse to any menu choices, because that also moves the position within the clip.

Is there some way to mark two points and then select what's in between?
