time machine backup failure
Time Machine-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.5.8), time machine backup failure
If you look around, mostly for backup failure because "disc is read only" you'll find that Apple must be remiss. The solution is to simply unplug your external backup device for a couple of minutes and then plug it in again. Works like a charm and you don't lose any data or emails...
Hello, could be many reasons.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?
http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Can't imaging something not being covered there.
Read through that, no my question isn't answered there 😟....."Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk is not available".....................
OK, in Disk Utility does your Backup disk show up? Is it Mounted? Does it need repair?
Aaaargh, 1) no it's not in disk utility, 2) I don't know what "mounted" means!, 3) it shouldn't need repair it's not old. Does all that sound bad?? thanks. Oh and yes it's OS X Lion 10.7.5
Not good it doesn't show up in Disk Utility, what Brand/Model drive is it?
Ooh, it's Time Capsule 3Tb. I had it working perfectly and like it says on the tin you didn't know it was there - till it's suddenly not!
Aw dang, another it just works... or doesn't Apple thing. 😟

Checked that too, no. And it's green light IS on! Going back a few months the same thing happened for a day or two and it just mended itself out of the blue, no warning, and I actually forgot all about it - it was as if I imagined it all. Which is why I'm completely at a loss as to know what's the problem.
Tried the Preferences reset, then the Disk Utility route, erased my entire disk, and first time around it failed again...then, I tried the Preferences again, and it started behaving...go figure.
If you erased - did you not lose what was on it? I dunno if I'm that brave....gulp!
Yup...it was useless to me if it wasn't backing up, so I bit the bullet and decided to sacrifice the old stuff and see if I could get the new stuff to backup.
These are the error messages - The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code - 6584)...........no idea what that means.
and the other one is saying there is an problem connecting to the server but can't be cause it's wi-fi connected to the printer and it's ok...
Ta 😕
I get just a mesage saying backup failed with no further info.
My extrenal is G-Drive slim
and it is about 2/3 full.
I have the same problem also - indentical in nearly all respects, getting the same error code but with the additional message "The backup disk image "Volumes/Data/Arndell's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use. I haven't been able to backup since mid-November.
