If I share a Verizon account w/ multiple iphones, is the primary account holder able to see my text messages on their phone? We currently share the same Apple ID. Can I change mine without erasing all my data?

I don't know about Verizon shared account but if you share an Apple ID you share iMessages too. Create a new Apple ID for you and use it to sign in iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud. If you are talking about family you can share an Apple ID for iTunes & App Stores in order to share your purchases. (Apps and Music).
