My iMac is hooked up directly to a cable modem with no router. I have an HP printer compatible with AirPrint wired to my iMac. Do I need a router to print directly from my iPad? I have no other real use for a router. I connect my iPad directly to the Airport connection on my iMac using Wifi

You would need a wireless network or share the printer from your computer to other devices.
Go into your System Preferences, Print & Scan preference, click the box to share this printer on the network.

Can you connect to the Internet wirelessly with your iPad? If you can you must have Wi-Fi enabled in your modem which might have a built in router. Mine is just like that. If this is the case you need no additional router to use your AirPrint compatible printer.
I turn on Wifi on the iPad and it connects through the Airport on my iMac whic is wired to my printer.
Does AirPrint require a router?
