Nov 25, 2012 4:35 PM in response to Jean-Mathiasby Kevin41269,The newest iPad is 4th Generation. It has the retina display and lightning connector not the 30 pin connector.
The only way I know to tell an iPad 2 from the iPad 3rd generation with out a lot of hassle is to run the model number thru Apple.

Nov 25, 2012 6:04 PM in response to Jean-Mathiasby E27,Easy, just look at the bottom where the power cord connects. The new ipad4 has a small slot lightning connector and the ipad2 has the old wide slot 30 pin connector that can only be attached face side up.

Nov 25, 2012 6:53 PM in response to Jean-Mathiasby AshtonCrunkelton,One way is to download "geekbench 2" and it'll tell you. Another way is to weigh, the iPad 2 is lighter than the new iPad and iPad with retina display. One more way is that the iPad 2 has a much more noticeable lower resolution screen compared to the two latest ones. Also check this out - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5452
I hoped I helped!!!
