imac won't start up

I oked a routine software update for my hp printer. The upload seemed to become stalled while moving the new files to their correct location. So I used the power button to turn off my imac. When I tried to restart the screen shows the apple logo and the spinner is working but the sign on screen never appears. It won't strat up. What can I do now?
