Can someone help me please ?

My iphoto photos are backed-up in timecapsule. Now I would like to restore some of the events (not all because I do not have enough space on my hardrive) Whenever I try to do so, it says that I do not have enough memory on my hard drive.

I have two questions please :

1- Is it possible to restore only selected events ? and how to do it ?

2- Is it possible to restore from iphoto (timecapsule) directly in to an external hard drive ? and how to do it ?

1 - you are not clear what you are doing - it sound like you may think that Time Machine is an archival system - it is not - it is a backup system and as the backup volume fills up it deletes the oldest files so sooner or later you will lose your older files and photos

2 - you can not selectively restore photos or events

3 - you can restore to a different location - launch TM and go to the iPhoto library you want to restore - select it and click restore - it will aso if you want to keep both - answer yes and select the external drive as the location for the restored library

Thank you Larry for your prompt reply. I recently purchased a Mac time capsule which I am using as a wifi spot and a backup for my Macbook air. As the hard drive of my Macbook was getting too full and as it is regularly backed up on my time capsule, I decided to delete most of my pictures from Macbook Iphoto. Now I wanted to try to uplodad in my macbook some of the events, hence my initial question.

I know now that I will not be able to restore partially my photos onto my macbook again. I really like my Mac but I do not feel comfortable when it comes to back-ups. I am just a little confuse and I simply want to make sure that the day I need to retrieve my pictures, I will find them somewhere........

I thought I would have been able to enter in time capsule backup and select : pictures, my events, and then simply access them as I would have if they were on an external drive. As I understand, unless I hve a Mac with a higher memory capacity, I will not be able to look at my pictures that are saved in my time capsule !

As a relatively new Mac user, I am still a little confused.

There are two type of software, backup and archive. Backup is for recovery of a system in case of disaster. Archive is to keep files forever.

If you are using Time Machine, a backup software and remove the file from your Mac, Time Machine when it needs the space will delete its copy of the deleted file. So the only thing you can be sure of getting back Time Machine are files that are still on your Mac. If you delete something then it may not be there.

Archive on the other hand deletes nothing. There is a problem with it in that eventually it will run out of space but until that happens anything can be recovered from an Archive even if it is deleted.

My suggestion to you is to get an external drive and move your library to the external drive.
