I have an iPhone 4s, I reset all my network settings and I cannot connect to password protected networks (say incorrect password, when I know it is correct) but I can connect to non-password protected networks. Help?

So I went to the ATT store and they did not even want to talk to me or help me... And I am an ATT Uverse and DSL customer! Such BS!!! They just told me it was phone issue and take it to apple.

Oh, and this all started because I couldnt do a back up. One of the suggestions was to delete all your old back ups because there could be a bug. So now I cant do a complete factory reset because I have no backups and I would be screwed. I did a "reset all settings" because I read that could be a solution too and thats how I got to the point where I cannot connect to my wifi now. I also tried to just do a "reset network settings" still cannot connect to my password protected network. Oh, and I still cannot backup my phone!!!

2 things- nobody from apple will ever tell you to delete your backups.

AT&T will tell you to call apple or go to an apple retail store.

save yourself some time! dont make things difficult. if you want to go to apple retail store, thats fine, but call the store, when the automated system picks up say MANAGER- keep saying manager until you're speaking with a human. This should be someone from the retail store.

ask to set up a genius bar appointment. if you go there without setting up an appointment your going to be waiting around for hours while all the people who did make appointments get priority.

I know this is annoying and frustrating, but remember to breathe. Do not make things harder on yourself.

A couple of things. You can connect the phone via USB to the computer and iTunes and backup the phone from there if necessary. That will ensure you have a backup of your device.

Another solution I have seen in regards to wifi problems has users select Other in wifi and type the SSID name directly in. After that, when it asks for the password, type that in. Has your iPhone ever connected to this wifit network before? What type of security do you have set on your router?

The phone wont let me backup at all, either thru wifi sync nor by cable...

And I did attempt to manually input the network id and password, I have ATT DSL and spent about an hour on the phone with them making sure it was not a router issue... My GF has a 4 and it connects just fine. It is hard for me to believe it is a hardware issue on the phone because I can connect to unprotected wifi networks just fine. The security type is WPA and I've been connected to my home network for over a year with no problems until today.

My fault for not explaining all the way...

I originally couldnt back up the device thru wifi sync nor thru the cable. One of the suggestions was to reset your network settings, which I did. Still couldnt back up the device, so I wanted to try backing it up to the icloud, I couldnt because I wasnt connected to my wifi at home. When I attempted to connect to the wifi it gave me an incorrect password, but it is correct. I have also been successful in using non-protected wifi networks. So yes, there are 2 problems, I do not know if they are related or not, but I would probably be able to back to the iCloud if I can use my network at home...

Backing up via wifi and via USB are two separate issues. They should not be related to the other, since the backup via USB uses iTunes direct and you backup to the computer. It does not use wifi at all. However, it does use a setting in iTunes to let it know that you are backing up via wifi.

The inability to backup via iTunes and USB should generate an error message. What computer OS are you using? Have you tried any of the iTunes troubleshooting?

I'm sorry for the delay in responding, I teach college and we were just getting back from the Thanksgiving break and are winding down towards semester finals, so I've been a little too busy to get on here. Let me know how your Genius Bar appointment goes.

So I went to the genius bar, which helped and didnt help because I had a pretty good idea what I was going to have to do. They said it was a software issue, and the most likely solution would be a reset all settings and media... but since I didnt have a backup that made it tough, however, I did have contacts, pics, etc synced with icloud which those are my important things anyway. Thats where the genius bar helped out, they pretty much allowed me to do factory reset without the worry about what I was going to lose, since they explained where I had certain information. My apps were lost, but were on my itunes, so it just took a few mins to restore that. Pretty much the only solution so far is factory reset. Just make sure ur contacts and photos/videos are synced, and everything else can be recovered, even without a backup, because itunes stores a lot of it. I also, did a manual import of my photos/videos, just in case, but I didnt need it. I am hooked up to the wifi at home, with a password no problem. Now I have to see if I can back up the phone after I set it all back up to how I like (personal user settings), and if I have an issue, I'll make a new thread since that is a different problem.

Well, I'm glad you were able to get the wifi taken care of. I'm glad they also explained a great deal to you about where information is backed up. You can also look at this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946 and see where your backups are located. Many people don't understand what is backed up and what they need to sync. It sounds as if it was not too difficult a lesson to learn for you.

I will be watching to see if you have backup issues. Some of the best troubleshooting for backup problems is to first try a manual backup in iTunes. Select the phone in the device pane, right click and select backup. If it doesn't work, then go into iTunes and delete past backups. You can also reset your sync history.

Hope everything works out.

I was able to both do a wifi sync backup as well as a cable backup. So when I did a reset to the factory settings whatever bug was not allowing me to do a backup went away, same as the bug that was not allowing me to hook up to password protected networks. Now, were they related, I dont know. I was hooked up to the wifi just fine before I encountered the backup error. But in any case, all my issues were resolved in one fell swoop. Thanks for the help.
