How to Cancel out background noise

I recall a technique used in Final Cut Pro wherein you can use a sample of background noise to cancel itself out.

the idea is you snip a representative bit of that sound, say the noise of driving in a car..you somehow use THAT to knock down ALL of that similar sound so that things like conversation can then be heard.

Is there a tool or technique for this in iMovie?

thank you!
