Connecting to Panasonic Viera Cast via AEBS Ethernet

I have an AEBS serial no 6F70408CVZC running version 7.6.1. I have Panasonic Viera Plasma TC-P55VT30 (about 1.5 years old) connected to the AEBS via ethernet cable.

When I run the connection test on the Viera Cast I get a message that says that it is connected to the network but cannot access the internet. It suggests enabling DHCP. My AEBS is configured to connect using DHCP.

I also have a BD player and reciever connected to the same AEBS that have no trouble accessing the internet.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The IP address to assign to your TV needs to be in the same address range that is being distributed by your base station. By default, the AirPort will provide IP addresses in the 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200 range. I suggest that you use 10.0.1.201 to be just outside of the DHCP server's range but still in the same address space.

The other IP addresses would be: Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, Router IP: 10.0.1.1. The DNS IP addresses would be the same that is assigned to any of your other network clients.

FWIW, I don't have this exact Panasonic model, but a 42" version instead and about the same age as yours. I have had no difficulties gaining Internet access from my AirPort Extreme using either a wired or wireless connection to the HDTV.

The DHCP warning may be related to making sure your HDTV is not configured to use DHCP instead of a static IP address. To double-check, go to your HDTV's menu > Setup > Network settings > IP address / DNS settings page. Both the "IP setting mode" and "DNS setting mode" should be set to "Automatic." If they are, check the IP addresses being provided. Do they match those you would expect for your network?

The 169.254.XXX.XXX IP address is indicating that the HDTV is not "finding" the base station's DHCP server. This address is known as a "self-assigned" address. As you can imagine, this type of address is why your HDTV is not gaining Internet access.

I would recommend that you first try your suggestion to assign static local IP addresses on your HDTV. This may or may not resolve the problem. If it doesn't my next recommendation would be to perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment, including your HDTV. Please post back your results.

Avoid wireless, that would just complicate things. Ethernet is much simpler.

Can you "ping" the TV from your Mac?

Open Terminal - it is in your Mac's Utilities folder - and type

ping 10.0.1.201

You should get output like the following

Johns-iMac:~ john$ ping 10.0.1.201

PING 10.0.1.201 (10.0.1.201): 56 data bytes

64 bytes from 10.0.1.201: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=143.913 ms

64 bytes from 10.0.1.201: icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=2.587 ms

64 bytes from 10.0.1.201: icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=2.536 ms

64 bytes from 10.0.1.201: icmp_seq=3 ttl=255 time=3.389 ms

^C

--- 10.0.1.201 ping statistics ---

4 packets transmitted, 4 packets received, 0.0% packet loss

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 2.536/38.106/143.913/61.088 ms

Johns-iMac:~ john$

Johns-iMac:~ john$

Press control c to stop the ping requests.

ofs1, when did you first notice this problem?

Has Viera Cast ever worked for you, if so, when did it stop?

The reason I am asking is that Panasonic prompted me for a firmware update for a Blu-Ray player several months ago, which resulted in it being unable to connect with symptoms very similar to yours. Since the firmware update broke its ability to connect to the Internet, there was no way to recover from this. The solution was to send it back to Panasonic. They exhanged it for another, which worked.

I hope this is not the case for you - contacting Panasonic customer service is h*ll.

They are set to "automatic".

When I run the connection test in Settings>network>connection test I get the message:

"Home network is available However IP address was not acquired. For Viera Connect use, please check the router's connection and settings (eg enable DHCP)."

It seems it is finding the network but can't connect to it?

The IP Address it lists is: 169.254.XXX.XX (the IP address found in Airport Utility for my AEBS is 75.72.XXX.XX)

Subnet mask is 255.25X.X.X

Do I need to set the IP address, Subnet mask and DNS manually?

Thanks

Nov 25, 2012 8:47 PM in response to Tesserax

Ok, I think we're getting closer, phew!

So now I have:

IP address 10.0.1.201

Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway ????

DNS 10.0.1.1

Is this all correct except for the default gateway which I don't have?

The tv setup screen also gives a place to enter Proxy Address and Proxy Port do I need these?

Thanks again!

Nov 25, 2012 9:31 PM in response to Tesserax

I entered 208.67.222.222 becasue I could not find where to look for what other computers on my network are using.

That setting would not get me connected when the TV ran the network test. I got the message:

"Connection Test failed. Gateway doesn't respond."

Could the DNS also be 10.0.1.1? That's what is stated in the Network section of system preferences for DNS server.

System Prefs>Network>Ethernet:

Configure IPv4 > Using DHCP

IP address: 10.0.1.2

Subnet MAsk 255.255.255.0

Router 10.0.1.1

DNS Server 10.0.1.1

I thought that as part of the power recycle I was supposed to do a factory default reset on the base station?

(((If it doesn't my next recommendation would be to perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment, including your HDTV. Please post back your results.)))

I did just do a complete power down of all components including the computer/base station/tv/modem. Left everything off and disconected for about 10 minutes.

When I turned things back on there was no change in the issue.

I don't actually know if I've connected through the tv. I usually use a Blu Ray player or Receiver which are connected via Ethernet to the same AEBS although through a different port. I hope the tv isn't at fault. It's over a year old and mounted to the wall. I suppose I could try getting the wireless adapter and try connecting that way, but an Ethernet cable is cheaper than the wireless adapter.
