usb ports not working
USB ports stopped working. Any idea on how to get them to recognize flash drives and external hard drive?

Try running theApple Hardware Test - if you've errors, you'll know that you've some defective hardware. Even if it comes up clean, I'd still take the machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run further diagnostics. I've the same model as you and my USB ports work without any problems.
