Transferring files to macbook
I used migration assistant to transfer music, photos and documents to my new macbook pro. It took ages, but when I went to look for the new files, I can't find anything on my macbook. What have I done wrong?

Did you set it to transfer the user from the old Mac before you created a user as part of the installation process? If you created a user with the same name as before it can't write into that, so it will have created another user and installed your files there.
Yes that's the problem, thank you. Everything is there under another user account. So now I wonder if I can merge two user accounts?!
I should rename the account you created, then rename the account created by the Migration Assistant to your old account name. That way you can proceed as before but you have a spare user account - this can be useful for troubleshooting.
...I should clarify that you shouldn't do this simply by renaming the Home Folder. The method of renaming a user is mildly involved and is described here:

Note that when you are logged in as root user you shouldn't get creative - you could do a lot of damage. Just stick exactly to the instructions.
