Simply: no.

It's not practicable for a number of reasons:

1. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Very few servers are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

2. Those who have tried this with services like iDisk found it to be deadly slooooooooow...

It might help if you were more precise in your terminology:

I don't want to re label and organize all my photos.

What does "re-label" mean, and what organisation are you referring to? If you can explain what you want to achieve maybe we can help you better.

So iPhoto is clearly a useless option at this point because you can't transfer the photos in similar format to the cloud

Again, what's a "similar format"? If you mean to store the Library in the cloud then you can include some other apps in the 'useless' column: Aperture, Lightroom, Picasa - in fact all the Managers out there.

And desktop hard drives are a thing of the past.

Might be a wee bit ahead of yourself there. But good luck.

I believe that large hard drives will be gone in a few years. Replaced by cloud drive storage with lots of memory on pcs. Can I transfer my iPhoto application essentionally to the cloud so I don't have to worry about losing my photo collection when my 2006 macbook finally dies?

I have recently started using phanfare for storing and viewing new photos. But when ever I try uploading old photos somewhere they either end up as numbered files or organized in single photo format and not in events. I'm able to put my photo library on an external hard drive. Can I do that in the cloud somewhere? Or do I have to start over again with the organizing with something like Dropbox, Skydrive or Picassa?

They may be, but before they go ubiquitous ultra-fast broadband will need to be standard. I'll put to you this way: Assuming you buy a Mac every 6 years, your next mac may not have a CD/DVD drive, but it will have a large HD, and so will the one you buy after that. There is simply no service online that has the speed or responsiveness of a HD for dealing with the large volumes of data involved in a Photo Library - however managed.

But when ever I try uploading old photos somewhere they either end up as numbered files or organized in single photo format and not in events.

What are you trying to upload, and to where, exactly? Also, what version of iPhoto do you actually have?

And yes, let's be quite clear. You can put your Library anywhere you want. It might get corrupted and if not, perform slow as molasses, but that's up to you.

I have latest version of iPhoto. I use phanfare for new, work related photos. Drop box for files which can also do photos but I have to create new events or albums and drag and drop individual photos into them once uploaded. That's a lot of work to archive 12,000 pics that are already in a format that I like. Apple doesn't seem to have an online photo option other than photostream.

My new computer is a macbook air which has a smallish hard drive but is fast, light and responsive. I don't store any photos there but put them directly to phanfare. I also have an ipad 3g enabled which is great for viewing phanfare pics from anywhere.

I don't care about speed. That will improve in time. I don't do computer related work and am not a photographer but I want to view pictures on line from anywhere and not have to store them on my computer.

Can I do that in the cloud somewhere?

Again - No - at least not successfully

Or do I have to start over again with the organizing with something like Dropbox, Skydrive or Picassa?

I doubt that Picassa will provide acceptable preformanace with a cloud based storage - but the place to ask it the Adobe Picassa forum - not the iPhoto forum

And Neither Dropbox nor SkyDrive offer photos management features - they are cloud based file storage not photo managers like iPhoto and Picassa

You do not seem to comprehend what you are asking - and for iPhoto the answer to operating witht he library in the cloud is no
