Gmail is web based, so use OS X web browser to create a new account there, then bookmark it.

Once the account is created, then head to Mail and fiddle with entering the data to import it's email into Mail program.

You can access the Gmail web based email from any web browser on any operating system, the only hiccup occurs when you use a different IP address it might want extra verification.

I don't even bother using Mail as it's cludgy mess, the spam filtering is web based Gmail is good enough. However if I had more than one email account I could see using Mail to bring them to all one location.
