Plug into iTunes, then a popup should say ''A new version of iOS (5.1.1) is available to install''. Click Download and Install, then leave your iPad and follow all instructions.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

iOS 5: Updating your device to iOS 5 or Later

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update.

We have the iPad 1 which was on software 3.2.2, and wanted to update it to 5.1.1; here is what we did...also our iPad WAS NOT Jailbroken (although I do not think it would matter)

First update your iTunes on a PC or Mac to the current version (11.0.1) as of today. Stay signed in with your Apple ID on this machine as you will come back to it later to finish the update...

Next backup your files or send them via email to yourself or an internet drive. There are also backup methods you can use (find more info online), we had nothing important on this iPad so we didn't bother with this.

Third, I turned off the iPad and then held the Home (square button on bottom face of iPad), and then pressed and held the Hold/Power button on top, and started counting to 10 as this happens you will see the Apple Logo appear keep holding til you reach 10 then release the Hold/Power button, and keep counting to 15, then release the Home button, and then slide your finger and open the iPad.

After this go to the Settings menu, and now you will have extended options in the menu to reset the iPad. I first reset the network settings, this took about 1-2 minutes. I then went and selected Reset everything to factory settings. It will ask you to confirm this, and once you proceed it does this rather quickly as well.

Next, you will see a graphic on the iPad screen showing you to connect the iPad to your PC or Mac via the USB cable do so and it should be recognized within iTunes and then it will display information about your iPad and also tell you that 5.1.1 is the new software version you can install.

Proceed through selecting this update and you are on your way. It takes about 20 minutes and it will download the update, then it will extract it, and then finally install it. It will then go through some more restarts to update and I believe it also checks for content from iTunes to resinstall (again I had none but I believe this is what it was referring to).

After this it will restart one last time with the new iOS 5.1.1 installed - and it will allow you to set it up as a new iPad or restore it; here you can restore from the past or let it redownload purchased items from iTunes.

My update was fairly simple and the iPad seems to run fine and does not seem slow. I am sure it would be slower than a new iPad, but that is to be expected as the newer machines were improved with faster processors and more memory.

GOOD LUCK!
