Proper U-verse 3801 RG to Time Capsule settings???

Hello,

First of all, I have done my due diligence and researched extensively on how to set up my network. Nothing has worked for me. I'm hoping that one of you have a solution for me.

Here is what I want to accomplish: Use the U-Verse 2-wire 3801 RG as a modem. Use the Apple Time Capsule 2TB (Airport Extreme with a hard drive) as the router. Keep my guest network on my Time Capsule running, along with Back to my Mac.

My current configuration is as follows:

3801 RG has the wireless mode disabled. DMZ+ is set up for the Time Capsule. Main U-verse TV Set Top box ethernet connected into LAN port 1. 2nd U-Verse set top box is connected to RG via coax cable.

Time Capsule is behind the RG via ethernet into LAN port 2. It is in DHCP and NAT mode. Wired connections: Slingbox, Blu Ray Player, Ooma Telo (VOIP) adaptor. Wireless connections: X-box 360, 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 1 MacBook, 1 iMac and a wireless printer.

All devices work fine with the exception of the spotty internet speeds. It varies between 17.5 mbps and 2 mbps downstream. iPhoto automatic upload to iCloud is OFF.

Does anyone else have a network set up like mine? I'd prefer plain English if you can help. Thanks in advance.

Why do you want TC as a router.. the 2wire is already a good router and placing TC in DMZ is not the same as real public IP.. it still requires NAT function in the 2wire. You are still double NAT and still will have issues .. maybe not as severe but still issues with this setup.

I would at least try it with the TC in bridge mode. You will need to get rid of the DMZ for the TC to work properly in bridge.

What speeds are you getting directly connected to the 2wire..?? There are a number of reports of the TC having slow routing issues in some setups.. I am not sure why.. but people often give up on the TC and simply not use it as router.

I wanted to broadcast a guest network, and wanted all the functions to work including back to my mac. I paid a lot of money for the TC and would like all functions to work properly. In bridge mode, these functions were disabled.

Direct connect speeds are acceptable and within the acceptable 80% of 18 Mbps.

So are you suggesting just using the TC as an access point? That would be setting it to bridge mode, correct?

Since you cannot turn off the router in the 2wire, then you do have an issue.

BTMM will work with any router that is upnp or NAT-PMP capable.. but if you need to reach the TC in bridge, that may not be possible via iCloud.. on the other hand it is easy to do it directly.. Since the 2wire is sure to have ddns which the TC lacks you can simply port forward AFP to a bridged TC and get access from anywhere remotely.

Guest network.. I do not have a solution for that.. Apple make decisions that seem odd.. to reduce user confusion they simply remove options that made sense to someone somewhere but are plainly stupid in the light of the real world. I would suggest the 2wire itself can be setup as the guest network.. and use the TC as your main wireless with suitable passkey that guests cannot use. You can keep people isolated from your network easily this way.

Think of it as buying a high power car.. huge high consumption engine.. every mod con.. it can drain a full tank in a few hours idling . You also have a small compact car that is very ordinary to drive. Yet is frugal to run, and in peak hour traffic is just as fast. Will you drive the high power car because you paid a lot of money for it.. I you should therefore get all the benefits of it??
