Please help! My wifi just stopped working on my imac. I am getting the message that the wifi has a self- assigned ip address (169.) and will not connect to the internet! Please help..My wifi is working fine with my iphone, ipad and other devices. It just stopped all of a sudden with my mac. Also- I tried to connect to a hot spot I have an that did not work either.

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Hmmm, just checking, you did use the Join Other method? And got no errors?
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it connect in the new account?
That did not work either...
Hmmm, lets see if there are any clues in the System log for the Date/Time of the last connection attempt, or maybe even that startup... Open Console in Applications>Utilities.
