First time Apple TV user....activation fails. When the system tries to connect to my WiFi, I'm not prompted to submit my log-in info. What am I doing wrong??

Have you tried restarting your router.
My WiFi is through a subscrition service provider...not hard wired. I was told this would be fine...?? The signal is plenty strong and I have no issues signing on with my laptops or iphones.
Not sure what you mean by subscription service, but if you have to sign on through a web page using your laptop or phone, then it isn't going to work with the Apple TV since it can't view web pages.
Yep. That's it...so I'll have to hard-wire and install a router, I suppose??
If you intend using your router with your current service, you may find that each attached device still needs to sign in using a web page.
