I cannot rent or access anything on apple TV, It says "apple TV cannot connect to the server at this time"
ever since the update nothing works. Is this getting fixed? Dropping the ball big time on the apple TV.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
There's nothing to fix, the problem is at your end. Have you tried restarting the Router.
I've tried that numerous times and I unplug the Apple TV for 60 seconds as well but still doesn't work. Can't be the router bc Netflix on Apple TV works just fine, so does mirroring through my iPad to Apple TV as well as my iPhone. It just seems that anything where it is required to access iTunes and my account hasn't worked since the update. All of my other devices function fine, I can rent movies with my iPad buy music with my iPhone etc. the Apple TV just doesn't function. Then every once in a while a few days later it just decides to work. Your thoughts?
I am also having problems with the Apple TV and it is NOT the router/wireless, I know this because I can easily access utube and view clips - proof the router works fine. I cannot get the Apple TV to access my netflix account. I tried accessing iTunes and no luck. I think it is APPLE that has problems.

I had a simmilar probelm after applying 5.1 update to my Apple TV 2nd gen.
I had to reset the Apple TV (General / Reset All) and start over with network setup, signing Apple ID and Netflix.
Worked for me.

I'm glad to hear someone gives a relavent answer besides Mr Winston Churchill who only repies "That's not relevant..." when his answer is meaningless. He tries to say it is the router "restart the router..." it is extremely relavent when the router works for everything else except the ATV netflix feature. -- I would disregard Winston's answers and look elsewhere for relavent answers.... tzbikowski seems to have an answer that makes since.
You miss the point. The OP was under the impression that their problem could only be fixed by a software update, that isn't the case, indded tzbikowski didn't solve their problem with a software update.
My netflix issue has been resolved - I have a 3rd generation apple tv. The original operating system was iOS 5.1. For some un-explanatory reason, my tv did not upgrade to the new system iOS 5.1.1. It seemed to be hung up in the upgrade process and never completed. I re-initiated the upgrade and my system now works fine. One of the first things a person needs to do is make sure they have the latest upgrades before looking elsewhere. I am still dismayed at how someone can identify a router as the problem when the router (as mine) worked fine for other internet programs. Best of luck
